It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

Hello, my readerly friends!

I've been MIA for awhile, but now, it's school holidays so I will have more time to visit you this week.
I'm just about to start the new J.K Rowling book,

and I have a feeling I'm going to be disappointed, after the phenomenon that was Harry Potter.
Besides, how awful is this cover??

However, I'd like to know for myself how her first book for adults pans out.

With all my work commitments, I've barely had a moment to read, but I have been grabbing a few minutes here and there to read this book:

All I really know so far, is that it is about a woman who has escaped from a mental asylum. A huge book, and pretty slow going right now, but I'm enjoying the writing style.

I'm also about a fifth of the way through this one, which is also slow moving, but is still quite interesting:

And I just opened this book, which looks more like the kind of story that gets me hooked:

Now it's time to visit Book Journey, to catch up with my favourite readers!

Hope you find some great reads this week!

xx

  1. I have always wanted to read The Woman in White. I should probably get to that one day. And that cover looks almost exactly like a print I have hanging in my hall!

I haven't gotten the Casual Vacancy yet, but I feel the same way! I am curious, but apprehensive about this "new" Rowling. :)

    Have a great week!

    1. I was curious about The Woman in White, because I read The Woman in Black not long ago, lol! Silly reason to choose a book, I know, but I also want to read the classics. Funny that you have a picture that looks the same as the cover! :)

    1. I think the cover looks a bit creepy, but the story isn't really. More of a mystery. Thanks for dropping by.:)

  3. I'm holding off a little on buying the JK Rowling book - seen some mixed reviews so far. Hope you enjoy it and the other books you're reading.

    1. Not sure what they were thinking in having this cover. Although I couldn't miss it at the shops. Perhaps they were thinking people would walk on by if they weren't startled into noticing it! :)

    1. I'm not too sure of it. It's okay, but not riveting. Hopefully the pace will speed up soon. :)

    1. I think Rowling was doomed in writing an adult novel. When I was in my late teens my Mum bought me one of the Roald Dahl books for adults, and I just couldn't come to terms with it. Some people are just meant to write for only one audience, I think. :)

  7. Rowlings newest novel is (I heard) about regular mundane people - as in, NO magic or fantasy elements. So it would be hard to compare, even if it weren't a comparison from YA/childrens to Adult writing. It's a whole different genre. Still - I always enjoyed her writing style, so maybe her book will be good. I think a lot of people are going to be expecting fantasy/magical things and will get a contemporary type fiction novel, and that in itself will disappoint some.

Every book that I've read by Juliet Marilier has been well written, very enjoyable fairytale stories. or fantasy. She's good

    1. I'm definitely not expecting fantasy or magic in Rowling's book. Just hoping for interesting characters and settings, and engaging writing.:)

Juliet Marillier lives in my city! I even met her at the Supa Nova Convention earlier this year. But to be honest, I just wish the pace was faster in this book. I may have moved on from epics. :)

  8. I hope you enjoy CV..I'm avoiding it until the hype dies down a bit ;) I'm also avoiding reviews.

I just read a review of The Woman in White on That's What She Read and it sounds like a really great read!
