Under the Water

It's Thursday, and time to play along with A Snap, A Set and A Song!

A Snap: This week's theme is Water, and although, I'm pretty sure I've shared this picture before, it fitted so well with the theme that I thought I'd share it again. It was taken at Perth's aquarium, AQWA.

My Set reflects my fantasy side, and my fascination for mermaids. While these days, they are mostly depicted as vicious beasts, I hold onto the idea that mermaids are beautiful, enchanting women from the deep:

There were at least three songs I wanted to share on the water theme, but this one kept popping into my head through the week. The video has a pretty sad ending, but the tune is so catchy:

I just have to sneak in another video! This one has a totally different feel, but goes with the mermaid theme, and is the happiest I have ever seen Madonna look in a video:

See some more water collections over at A Snap, A Set and A Song, or make one yourself - it's fun! xx

Favourite Movies from the 90s

Lisa from Sweet Little Pretties has started a meme called Sweet Little Things About Me, and this week's challenge is to name our Favourite Movie from the 90s. I adore movies so I couldn't stick to just one and had to narrow it down to categories, just like an awards show:

Most spectacular -  Edward Scissorhands

Most inspirational ending- Shawshank Redemption

Most unusual - The Piano

Most lovable character -  Forrest Gump

Most quotable one-liners - Muriel's Wedding

Most romantic ending - Pretty Woman

Sexiest onscreen couple - Meet Joe Black

Most heartwrenching - Shadowlands

I could go on and on really! But these are the movies from the 90s that are most unforgettable to me!
How do you feel about them?

It's Monday, What Are You Reading?

Hi, all my reading buddies! This week I've managed to read and finish three books!
I found this one on Kobo, and it sounded so interesting. I'd heard of it, but never read it before. It was only three chapters long, and it was pretty weird and quirky, but I enjoyed it! Such an odd read, about a man who wakes up one morning to find he has become an insect. Truly bizarre. Gotta have a bit of sci-fi in your life now and then!

I also finished The Great Gatsby and have mixed thoughts about it.

The writing is beautiful, but I couldn't really take to the characters. I think I will enjoy it more when I see the movie. The Robert Redford one from the 70s might be a bit old-fashioned now, but I'm really looking forward to the Baz Luhrmann version, which I am sure will be a visual feast.

Another book I finished was Everneath.

It started off a bit teenagery, but once I had more of an idea of what was going on it became pretty interesting and a page turner. It helped that there was a countdown at the beginning of each chapter as to how long the girl had on earth before she was dragged backed down to the Everneath (a hell-like existence, it seems). In the end it was the love story that I appreciated the most.

And this week I am reading (drum-roll please) The Hunger Games.  I think I am about the last bookish person in the world to read this series and am looking forward to it!

I'm linking up with Book Journey to find out what the latest good reads are:

Sunday Fashion and Food for the Soul

Just dropping in to share the outfit I wore to church today. When I bought this skirt I just loved the colours and didn't even try it on, so when I realised how tight it was I hitched it up to wear as a dress! Works for me, and is still long enough to be modest.

Dress - Cotton On
Top - Target
Cardi -  Valley Girl

My inspiration for today's outfit is mainly Faye Dunaway in Bonnie and Clyde (excuse the gun, lol!) I even have the beret, but I don't have the confidence to wear it yet.

I'm linking up with some other fashion bloggers to see what they are wearing:

Don't get me wrong - going to church isn't just about what I'm wearing!
We have a great time at church. We drifted back and forth from the church for a few years, but now we are back proper, and loving it! I feel very safe there. I feel that everyone is on the same page.

And I have a greater understanding now, of the reason for attending each week: to renew our baptismal covenants and to repent of the 'sins' we have committed through the week. (By sins I mean any big stuff, but even the little things like judging people, cross words, bad language etc.) Because of Christ's Atonement - when he suffered for our sins in the Garden of Gethsemene - we are able to take the sacrament, and repent of our sins each week. We are forgiven for those sins, and the burden of them is released from us so we have a clean slate. Every week! How blessed, to not have a trail of bad thoughts and deeds trailing behind us wherever we go.

To start each week with a clear conscious and a happy countenance gives us the energy and the will to spread that love and happiness amongst others, and to help make the world a better place!

May you have an awesome week!

Film Love - 80s Flashback

We were watching the Project Runway finale the other night when Heidi Klum came out wearing this outfit:

Straight away I thought of Olivia Newton John in this outfit in the movie Xanadu,

and it got me thinking about how much I LOVE that movie!

There are a lot of art deco influences in the styling of this film. The title itself is an art deco font, and the Xanadu building is streamlined moderne art deco:

The building was the Pan Pacific Auditorium, which burnt down in 1989.

Here are some more vintage touches:

Rather than post every song here from the movie (even though I'm sorely tempted!) here is a video collage exemplifying the dance scenes, sets and costumes from Xanadu:

LOVE IT! And that final high note Olivia hits! You try it - it ain't easy!

If you thought Xanadu was the first film in which Gene Kelly roller-skated, check out this video from his 1955 film It's Always Fairweather:

TALENTED!

Many people thought Xanadu was a bomb of a movie, but I loved it back in the 80s, and I love it now!
Sweet memories!

Do you have a soft spot for the Xanadu movie?
